Shortly I will be blogging about the confirmed details of the sixth classroom construction. I am excited about what lies just around the corner for us and can’t wait to share it with you. The Proprietors are well along the road with this project and are awaiting pricing confirmation. More on this soon.
Last week I was pleased to met with the Marlborough District Council to discuss plans for two possible new pedestrian centre islands for Maxwell Road. It has been a mission of myself and principals before me to get these crossings installed for the safety of our children for a long while and it is great to see the MDC moving ahead with this. The exact timing and location of the median islands has yet to be decided but we are expecting there to be one somewhere near the Maxwell Rd Dairy, near Burleigh Rd. Watch this space.
We as a Staff have discussed and decided that there will be no RVS Talent Quest this year. There are several reasons for this.
The first reason is that many of the opportunities a Talent Quest affords are now being offered in other forums within the school. Some examples of these include Zest Media, the Music Academy (TEMPO and Music Assemblies), the development of the Kidz Shed, the Learning Extension Group (LEGS), growth of the RVS Sports Academy, ZEST and the soon to be released Honours Programme. This aligns with the philosophy of the school, whereby more and more of the individual talents and gifts of our students are being recognised, endorsed and bolstered through our classroom programmes every day, rather than just one-off events. The second reason is the opportunity being provided through our Proprietor, Elim Christian Centre Blenheim on the 30th of July. This is an event students and parents of RVS are most welcome to enter. More information on this will be given soon and the school contact for this is Jane Fransen. Writing is always easier when one's heart is in it. Here is Mr Elwood prepping an engine as part of a writing programme run jointly through the classroom and the Kidz Shed. There is a lot of good research, best practice, experience and work gone into creating rich, hands-on experiences for our writers at RVS.
If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got. We are working on many different initiatives to lift student engagement in learning. It is important for kids to be engaged, interested and have ownership of their learning. It was a pleasure to host many different Marlborough Schools in the RVS/Elim Hall on Monday the 23rd May. Chess Power sent a representative to run the chess competition day where every student plays at least seven games. Twelve of our students were involved, all of whom did very well. Several of our students received medals and all received certificates. Junho Kim was our highest ranked player who not only won five out of his seven games (several against college students), he also was the highest ranked primary/intermediate student in the entire competition. I will speak more about this at my Principal’s assembly next Friday. Well done team!
As you will be aware we recently advertised nominations for three places on the Board of Trustees. Three people were nominated, thus a full election was not needed. I wish to congratulate Neroli Vallance and Petra Bridgen for their election to the Board and Mike Ponder for his re-election. These three are of the highest calibre and we welcome them and look forward to their input. I also wish to thank, from the bottom of my heart, Pat Eising and Owen Wilson for their extensive and valuable service to Richmond View School as Trustees.
Owen Wilson fulfilled his duties as Chairman of the Board with the highest degree of integrity, selflessness and commitment. He has been a wonderful support to me personally, the Board as a whole and to the vision of Richmond View School. The RVS BOT will meet again on Tuesday the 31st May and the first order of events is to elect/re-elect the Chairperson of the Board until the next election. This morning in Devotions we talked about the fact that you can rely on two things to remain constant on this planet: God and change. God is kind, loving, slow to anger and merciful. It is great that He doesn't change. Things around us do change though, and we discussed not being worried about these changes, because God holds us and our future safely in His hands, both individually and as a school. Some of the exciting changes at RVS include Room 3A with Mrs Crossley in the library, Mrs Powell overseeing Room 3, a beautiful new door between Room 1 and Room 2 and six new faces around the school. Take a look around next time you are in. Some of the other big events for this term include:-
It is important as we grow and change that we keep some things sacred, such as that fact that God is the head of this house, that ongoing good communication is reciprocal and very important, and that we all have an important role to play in educating our young people. What a great term it is going to be. Dave Pauling Principal |
